Hair loss is a genetic issue that has been plaguing men and women for centuries. Both men and women come to me frustrated and lacking self-confidence because of thinning hair they have no control over. It’s a common problem. Sixty-five percent of men have noticeable hair loss by age 60, and 35 million men in the United States experience hair loss, while it affects 21 million women. Hair loss sufferers can expect to lose an average of 100 hairs per day.
Despite the prevalence of baldness, effective treatments are limited. Prescription medications can be successful for some patients, but there’s a potential for unwanted side effects. Hair transplantation surgery is expensive, has a relatively long recovery time and does not treat underlying medical issues.
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic offers the latest innovations in hair restoration, Platelet-Rich Plasma treatment (PRP). Some of the benefits include:
- Affordable and proven effective
- No surgery required and no downtime
- No harmful side effects
- Increase blood supply to the follicle
- Increase hair shaft thickness
- Trigger and maintain the growth phase
- Control hair growth cycle
- Decreased hair loss
What is PRP/PRFM?
PRP and PRFM use your own platelets to stimulate hair growth. The healing growth factors that platelets contain are like signals that instruct your tissue to regenerate and multiply. This simple effect has been used with great success across different fields of medicine for wound healing and chronic conditions to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue. So it makes sense that the same method would be successful in re-growing healthier, stronger hair follicles.
With PRP, the healing growth factors of the platelets release into the scalp to rejuvenate shrinking follicles. PRFM, a “turbo-charged” version of PRP, takes it a step further with the addition of calcium chloride, creating a more stable concentrate. This provides follicles with longer exposure to the growth factors essential for superior follicle rejuvenation.
The procedure for PRP and PRFM is identical. There may be some sensitivity, but anesthetic solutions such as cold ambient air are used to minimize discomfort.
- Blood is drawn from the patient to collect platelets. This typically takes 10-15 minutes.
- We separate the platelet-rich plasma from the blood cells in a centrifuge.
- PRP/PRFM is applied to the scalp via injections with a thin needle. This typically takes 5-10 minutes.
Most people require three to four sessions initially, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, with subsequent maintenance treatments 1-3 times per year. There is no downtime or recovery time. You can take a warm shower the same evening after treatment.
There is no cure for baldness, but regular treatments of PRP/PRFM can significantly slow down the effects of balding and make hair thicker.
