Want well-rested employees this winter?

Posted by Paula Turnquist

It’s winter, a time when employees go on vacation, gain weight, and potentially lose sleep according to the National Sleep Foundation. Conditions such as insomnia and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can cause problems for your employees, so here are a few tips to help them be more rested and focused.

Let us show you how you can save 15-30% on your company's total medical costs.

Diet and Exercise. Heavier meals with family and friends are sometimes unavoidable, but the fattier the foods, coupled with little to no exercise, means less sleep for your employees. Set up healthy snacks in the office, like a vegetable or fruit tray, and encourage your employees toget up and move to keep them awake and alert.

Direct Sunlight. Days in the winter are the shortest and darkest of the year, so the body may not feel tired when it’s bedtime. Sunlight, from windows or a 30-minute walk outside (a small sacrifice for an efficient employee), can brighten an employee’s mood considerably.

Professional Help. If all else fails, a psychologist, or even a sleep center visit, could be the best way for your employees to pinpoint what’s keeping them awake. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic has a specialized Sleep Center devoted to monitoring a variety of sleep patterns for a diagnosis in a comfortable environment.
