Help your employees plan for a healthy vacation

Posted by Christine L. Tricoli

One of the busiest times of year for travel, July and August can be among the least productive at work, as countless employees take time off in search of sunshine and downtime. With so many people out of the office, it can be difficult to cover all the work left behind.

Therefore, everyone benefits when employers encourage healthy travel habits long before vacationers leave the office. While that might work for pre-scheduled trips, however, it becomes much more difficult to cover unexpected absences due to illnesses picked up while away from work. What's more, as sick workers rush to the doctor after their time off, employers are stuck paying for a surge in claims during the slowest part of the year for business.

Here are a few tips you can convey to your workforce before their summer holidays get underway:

Do some research
If they're planning to travel abroad, suggest your employees do some research on their destination ahead of time. Have them answer the following questions to get started:

  • What risk factors might they be exposed to?
  • What is their health insurance coverage like where they are going?
  • Where is the closest hospital to their hotel?

Schedule a pre-trip appointment
Before embarking on their vacation, your employees should make an appointment to meet with their doctor. During this appointment, doctors can augment any research patients have already completed, as well as provide preventative care specific to each patient's medical history and intended destination.

Plan ahead
Encourage your employees to consider their health while they pack, the Centers for Disease Control suggested. For example, adding a few first-aid items to a suitcase can help minor cuts and injuries from getting infected while on the road. Similarly, sunscreen and bug spray are critical for those on the way to tropical destinations.
