Employers eyeing employee fitness to lower healthcare costs

Posted by Paula Turnquist

Does your company spend too much money on employee healthcare costs? Some businesses are trying to increase office fitness levels to benefit the bottom line. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that even small increases in regular exercise can significantly improve morale and physical wellness.

kelseycare_blog_post_feat_img_employee_fitness.pngOne recent study found that even just 10 to 20 minutes of exercise per day can significantly lower the risk of serious chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, corresponding to a drop in healthcare costs. The study tracked 4,345 workers, 30 percent of whom had risk factors that often lead to diabetes and heart disease. When that group did not exercise, their average annual medical expenses totaled $3,855. However, when the at-risk employees exercised 30 minutes per day, five days per week — the amount recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — their yearly healthcare costs fell to $2,770, a difference of $1,085 per employee.

If you are a Houston-area business owner or executive who is interested in lowering your employees’ risk of disease while lowering your company's total medical benefits costs by 15 to 30 percent, consider the KelseyCare health plan.
