Combining company health with company culture

Posted by Paula Turnquist

Encouraging employees to live healthy lives can be challenging, and building a company culture takes time, patience, and incentive. Events can help a team create bonds and build trust. Typical events may include an office party, a weekend retreat, or a weekday happy hour. Below are ideas on how to promote a culture of health while your employees bond.

A Marathon for a cause. This stretches an employee’s legs, and is for a good cause! Pick a walk or run you really believe in and promote it around the office. Make company team shirts and have employees wear them a few days before the race. It’s a conversation starter around the office and a great way to get employees to form friendships outside of the office.

Team outings. Again, happy hours are great for conversation, but laser tag or bowling at a local event center gets the blood pumping and encourages friendly competition. Switch up teams as often as possible so everyone can get to know one another. Who knows, maybe if they work well as a laser tag team, they’ll make an even better professional team.

Learning together. If there’s little time to bond outside of work, taking an extended lunch to attend a discussion on a health topic affecting someone in the office, or an event focused on a health observance of the month, is a good way to keep conversations flowing. Kelsey-Seybold, for instance, puts on a “Chat and Chew” monthly where Kelsey doctors speak about a specific health topic. Events include lunch and a chance to win a door prize. It’s a great opportunity to learn together and grow together as a team.
