Can targeted healthcare programs save money?

Posted by Paula Turnquist

Those who suffer from diabetes must constantly manage their condition by watching what they eat, staying on top of their medications and participating in a regular exercise regimen.

But they don't have to do it alone. With the right support, it can be much easier for diabetics to have healthy and productive lives.

A recent study demonstrates this fact. According to an article published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, health plans that are specifically designed for people with certain conditions may be far more effective than more general healthcare plans.

Let us show you how you can save 15-30% on your company's total medical costs.

The study examined diabetics who were eligible for a plan that was specifically tailored to their condition, and compared them to those who were enrolled in standard healthcare plans. The patients on the targeted plans were better at actively managing their health and were sure to take their medications regularly.

This is important. Diabetics who do not take their medications as directed are more likely to need emergency hospitalization from time to time. By ensuring that patients take steps to prevent their condition from becoming serious, targeted healthcare plans can ultimately save money. Indeed, the particular plans studied by the researchers were able to cut annual out-of-pocket costs by several hundred dollars in some cases.
