Beware myths about workplace obesity

Posted by Julio Iturriaga

Are myths about workplace obesity hurting your business? That just might be the case.

In a recent Forbes article, it was noted that many employers do not realize that the obesity epidemic is affecting their workplaces, and those who do generally assume that there is nothing they can do about it.

In fact, obesity is a growing problem that is affecting businesses in nearly every country on Earth. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost 40 percent of adults worldwide were overweight and 13 percent were obese in 2014.

Let us show you how you can save 15-30% on your company's total medical costs.

As businesses continue to expand globally -- even if your company has somehow managed to 'avoid' the epidemic – chances are that your suppliers, subsidiaries, or other offices are affected.

It is tempting for employers to assume that a worker's obesity is purely the sole result of his or her personal choices. However, this mindset only serves to absolve workplaces from the very real role that they play in facilitating weight gain. The layout and structure of a workplace often determines crucial health factors, such as how much time employees spend sitting, what they choose to eat and their general stress levels.

Ultimately, an unhealthy workforce costs employers money, in more ways than one. Productivity falls, and employers end up on the hook for higher healthcare costs.
