3 characteristics of high-quality health plans

As you set out to select a health plan, sifting through the sea of options can be overwhelming. With so many plans to choose from, how are you supposed to distinguish between those that will deliver quality care and those that won't? Sometimes it can feel like you'd need a crystal ball to tell whether a given plan will end up meeting your expectations or falling flat. 

Many plans try to convince you of their worth by simply inundating you with information. To identify the highest-quality health plans in your lengthy list of options, however, just a few characteristics end up making all the difference. As you evaluate potential health plans, look closely at these indicators, as they can point you toward the highest-quality option:

1.     Patient Satisfaction

No matter what a health plan advertises, it can be tough to tell how its programs end up impacting its patients. The simplest way to get a sense for what it might be like to be a member is to see what current patients have to say. Carefully review consumer ratings about each plan on your short list, looking closely at the specific areas of care that are most important to you.

2.     Prevention

Top-notch health plans not only treat diseases, but they help their members prevent them. If a health plan offers proactive wellness programs or its mission reflects a preventative approach, there's a good chance it supports the type of comprehensive care you're looking for. 

3.     Benefits

At the end of the day, you need to select a plan that covers your most pressing health care needs. If a plan appears to take a preventative approach and boasts a long list of satisfied members, run through the list of services it covers. Now is not the time to compromise. If you don't see a benefit that you know you'll need, move to the next plan on your list.
