Xtrac Laser Therapy Brings New Life to Psoriasis, Vitiligo Patients

Posted by Anita Mehta, M.D. on Apr 16, 2016 9:30:00 AM

People living with serious skin conditions know that day-to-day routines can sometimes be difficult. Psoriasis can be itchy at best and painful at worst and prevent those dealing with it from doing normal activities to avoid making their outbreak worse. Those who have vitiligo often feel stigmatized and sometimes suffer from mood disorders or depression as a result. The good news is that therapy for these types of skin disorders is available, and patients are seeing extraordinary success with one specific type of treatment: Xtrac laser therapy.

Powerful Beams of Ultraviolet Light

The Xtrac laser is a gentle FDA-approved ultraviolet laser used in the treatment of certain skin conditions. Unlike other lasers, the Xtrac laser is an excimer laser, similar to what’s used in lasik surgery.

This means that during treatment for skin issues like psoriasis or vitiligo, a physician or specialist can treat the affected area with minimal risk of thermal damage to surrounding healthy skin.

While it can’t treat all skin issues, the Xtrac laser has been especially successful in treating psoriasis, vitiligo and dermatitis.

What to Expect When Undergoing Treatment

The question I’m most often asked is whether there is pain associated with the Xtrac. Most patients don’t feel any pain at all – only a sensation that feels similar to a mild sunburn. Anesthesia isn’t required.

When going for this in-office treatment, you will be seated comfortably while your nurse runs the laser over affected areas. You may feel a slight burn for 12-24 hours following your treatment. The entire procedure will likely last less than 30 minutes.

The majority of patients begin seeing results after three or four treatments, but your treatment plan is something that you and your dermatologist will discuss to ensure the best results for your particular skin condition.

Because the Xtrac laser is so gentle, it is safe to use on most parts of the body where skin conditions such as psoriasis or vitiligo are present. Because this type of laser therapy is so focused and effective, most patients see improvement of their symptoms within 10 sessions. Patients typically see relief for between four or six months or longer depending on the severity of the condition. Something that most patients don’t know is that this treatment is often covered by most major insurance companies, so check with your insurance provider prior to undergoing Xtrac laser therapy.
