Water- The Miracle Drink We’re Ignoring

Posted by Cherice Conley-Harvey, M.D. on May 5, 2018 9:04:00 AM

It’s no secret that drinking water is good for you. It is one of the most natural things in the world, but did you know that there are several benefits to drinking water that can play a huge impact in the way you look and feel?

You can actually reduce your stress just by drinking a glass of water. All of our organs, including our brains, need water to function properly. If you are dehydrated, this can cause stress, which in turn can cause dehydration. When you are under stress, your heart rate is up and you are breathing more heavily, so you are losing fluid. This cycle can be avoided just by making sure you stay hydrated.

6 Benefits of Drinking Water

  1. Maintains the balance of body fluids
  2. Helps to control calories
  3. Energizes muscles
  4. Keeps your skin looking great
  5. Helps your kidneys
  6. Helps to maintain normal bowel function

Water is involved in every type of cellular process in your body, and when you are dehydrated, they all run less efficiently. Metabolism, in particular, is basically a series of chemical reactions that takes place in your body. So by staying hydrated, you can keep those chemical reactions moving much more smoothly.

Do you Really Need Eight 8-Ounce Glasses of Water a Day?

Yes, but some may need more while others may need less. It really depends on many factors, including your health, how active you are, and where you live. In general, you want to try to drink between half an ounce to an ounce of water for every pound you weigh, each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day. If you live in a hot climate, you would be on the higher end of that range, and vice versa for a cooler climate.

Houston is known for its scorching heat, so it may come as no surprise that we Houstonians are aware of how important it is to stay hydrated. If you get dehydrated, your body no longer has enough fluid to get blood to your organs. So dehydration is a serious matter. Add in extreme heat and sports, and you are looking at a really dangerous combination.

Tips to Ensure You Drink Enough Water

  • Keep a bottle of water with you at your desk or workplace.
  • Drink small amounts of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
  • Replace at least one cup of coffee or beverage with water.
  • Carry an insulated sports bottle with you when on the run and fill it up periodically.

Drinking enough water is very important for everyone, especially children because we are seeing more kidney stones in children in recent years. The main cause is not drinking enough water and also having a poor diet.

By making a conscious effort to have easy access to water, you will be more likely to drink enough so you can avoid dehydration and can reap the benefits of this miracle drink.
